PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Cardiff Council commissioned a new 1,500 m cyclepath and footpath extending from Blackweir Ambulance Station to Excelsior Road. The alignment passes through a wooded corridor beside mature trees. More than 8,500 m² of 100 mm CORE TRP was specified to create a no-dig, load-spreading formation beneath the porous macadam surface.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

The 1.5 km route had to provide a durable, accessible surface for cyclists and pedestrians while safeguarding mature trees along the wooded alignment. The build-up needed to minimise excavation and soil compaction, maintain drainage through the root zone and support regular active-travel use.

THE SOLUTION:

Following consultation with Horan Construction, CORE specified the 100 mm TRP system for the anticipated pedestrian and cycle loading. Panels were installed along the tree-sensitive corridor, filled with free-draining aggregate and overlaid with porous macadam. The completed no-dig build-up distributed surface loads above the existing soil while delivering a smooth, hard-wearing route from Blackweir to Excelsior Road.
